Virtual Traffic Lights

Have you ever been stuck in traffic jam?

                                                              LIKE THIS

In Malaysia, especially those who live in urban area such as Kuala Lumpur will definitely facing this problem. It is hard to avoid traffic jam during critical hours like in the morning where people rush to their work places and also during lunch hour to grab their snacks.

A researcher and his team from Pennsylvania are try to imitate how ants, termites and bees communicate in a right in busy colonies and hive.

His company recently patented an algorithm that directs traffic at busy junctions. As cars approach the intersection, they use dedicated short-range communications to quickly exchange information on their number and direction of travel.

In other words, the LARGEST group of vehicles is given an in-car green light while cars in the other cluster see a red light and have to wait. Then the next largest group of cars will be given green light.

The project has attracted million dollars from in funding from private groups and highway administration since it began in 2009.

So how about us? We are in developing country. Thus, everyone wants to be the first to get to any destination. Besides, the traffic officers do not have to stand on road during sunny day anymore.

Have a nice day everyone! :)

  1. This is somehow cool.. but I wonder how long is the duration for each in-car green light given? I mean what if the largest number of cars always come from the same 'road'? Greast post btw! :)
