Aging Backwards: The Real Benjamin Button NOT Brad Pitt

Salam, madam and friends.

Have you guys ever watched that movie "The curious case of Benjamin Button" starring Brad Pitt released in 2008.
Its about a guy who ages backwards like he was born old and wrinkly then grows up younger.

Well, of course this is fiction but not anymore...

Yesterday, its all over Yahoo; showcasing two brothers who used to live ordinary lives with their own families but suddenly began to deteriorate in term of mental and physical capacity.

In other words, their getting younger but still trapped in their grown up bodies.

The Yahoo article stated:

"Diagnosed with a terminal form of leukodystrophy, one of a group of extremely rare genetic disorders that attack the Myelin, or white matter, in the nervous system, spinal cord, and brain. In the Clarks' case, the condition has not only eroded their physical capacities, but their emotional and mental states as well. "

Here's a screen shot of the article. Click here.

I can't imagine the heart break the parents feel for their sons. Their parents are now taking care of them; their current mental age is 8 years old!

Here is a video of them on a documentary on Channel 4; a UK TV channel.  Click here.

This story makes me feel so grateful for what I have.

I know this story ain't very technological but it definitely is a medical mystery.

That's all, hope you'll find this informative and a little something to ponder upon.

Faster than bullet?

Hi everyone! :)

Have you been to Japan? Japan has always been a leader in high-speed transport and its latest machine is no exception.

The latest prototype is a magnet-powered train designed by Central Japan Railway Co.

This magnetic, levitating train can reach speeds of 310 mph. Without actually touching any tracks, and therefore because of no friction, the train can reach much higher than standard models.

The train's cars can hold up to 24 passengers.

The nose of the prototype train.

Currently, the fastest bullet train can make the journey between the stations in 90 minutes. The new trains could cut that time to 40 minutes. Impressive!

Central Japan Railway Co. expects to launch the new trains between Tokyo and Aichi by 2027.

Audience Response System

Hello all,

I think most of us have heard or came across this thing called Audience Response System. It might not be used here in IIUM, but as future educators I think it's crucial for us to know what this system can do to help create an interactive learning atmosphere.

Here it goes:

Figure 1
By using this system, teacher can set up questions or quiz and projected these questions using LCD projector or smartboard. Students can pick their answers individually by choosing the A, B,C or D using the wireless keypad device as shown in Figure 1.  Teacher then can get prompt responses from the students. Teacher can also receive the results afterwards and decide whether the class is ready for next lesson or not. An  audience response software needs to be installed in the teacher's computer in order for this system to be working.

This system is also used in other fields as well, especially during meetings or conference. This system contributes to a timely-efficient interaction as well as effective communication especially for evaluation purposes for teachers. This will enhance the participation and engagement of students in a classroom.

However, this system is costly. The price per one keypad device is USD179, which means in MYR, it is around MYR545. And of course in order to cater the needs of 40 students you need to have at least 40 devices so.... 545 x 40 = MYR 21800. Wow. However, it might be worthwhile as it can be considered as a long term investment I guess. :)

Heli-note

Bismillahirrahmanirrahim

assalamualaikum everybody ^^

have you ever had any problem in passing notes or messages to your friend next door? or your mother who get so stressed out every time she calls her children for lunch downstairs but no one appears as they are too busy doing their own business.

There is solution for that! introducing...... heli-note ^^v

Heli-note or officially called Skywriter UFO

this is not an ordinary helicopter which children usually play with. it is build up with LED technology that will display your message for up to 20 words or 170 characters. we can control the flying pattern and reader could read our message from midair via the fast moving propeller. the controller requires 6 AAA batteries while the heli will automatically recharge its lithium-polymer battery through the controller. The heli is safe to be used by children 8 year and above. isn't it interesting?

Lets change from sticky notes to technology instead :D

till we meet again

While I was scrolling through the news feed on Facebook, my eyes spotted on an interesting cup. It is not just an ordinary cup, but its a cup that can brew coffe! lets check it out. ^^

You might think that a coffee mug is just that – a coffee mug. However, what if we were to tell you that this is no ordinary coffee mug? Sit down and hear us out for a while as to the uniqueness of this particular drinking contraption. Basically, it is capable of making a single cup of French press – executing it to perfection, if you will, and yet remains dishwasher safe for easy cleaning up once you have kick started your day with the perfect cuppa.
The minibru Coffee Mug more or less eliminates two niggling issues for those who can be pretty particular in their lives – it means you need not rely on a French press pot any more, and there is no worry to drink all of it before it gets cold, and neither do you need to look silly while drinking from one of those French press travel mugs. With the minibru Coffee Mug, you can have a single, perfectly brewed cup of French press coffee while oozing with class. All you need to do is fill your cup with coarsely ground coffee to the lower fill line, pour in some hot water to the upper fill line, and be patient for up to three minutes before you insert the filter cylinder and press it down slowly until the entire brew is completely filtered.

It must be great if I could bring this to class which on the same time reduce my sleepiness :p

short update from me and lets get some update about Palestine again ^^
till we meet again
Assalamualaikum

Out of the ordinary documentaries! Who needs National Geographic; well, unless you subscribed to it.

Salam, friends and madam.

There's this channel on Youtube called VICE that is dedicated to exploring unthinkable aspect, shooting through the lens and projecting it to us.

This is their description of themselves:

"VICE specializes in unabashed depravity and going to places we don't belong. Now, thanks to YouTube, we have compressed two decades of our unique immersive approach to these subjects into delicious bite-size morsels. Herein you will find people talking frankly about their hatred and love for various things, general heresy, the only travel and news documentaries you'll want to watch, tons of exclusive new stuff, and probably a lot of cats. You're welcome. "

They have these outrages and definitely out of the ordinary documentaries that'll make National Geographic blush! Well, not full on blush but may a little shy *_*

Click on this picture, it'll take you straight to the home page.

They talk about everything from bride kidnapping in Kyrgyzstan to the most isolated man on earth!

If your bored, got stable internet connection and want to watch something cool! This is the channel for you.

They have tones of video's to choose from and some are even conveniently in a playlist for you viewing pleasure.

Click on this picture, it'll take you straight to the video listings.

This is my favorite video about Koreans and their perception of beauty. To me their unbiased when documenting it.

This is about North Korea. They got in and is legally/illegally filming. An eye opening video.

Disclaimer:
The videos can or maybe a little explicit to some since it touches on religion, sex, race and all bad things but these are all showcased for the sake of exposing the truth. If you don't fancy their videos than just walk away.

*Personally, as legal adults I don't see any harm in watching with the right intentions, of course.

Don't say I didn't warn you but I didn't want to scare you either. Take a peek at their video list there's got to be something that make you curious^^

Hope ya'll liked it. Check it out, ya'll.

Galileo Thermometer

Assalamualaikum dear Mdm. Rose and my friends.

Does anyone knows what this is??

This is a Galileo Thermometer. This is a thermometer invented by Galileo Galilei in the 1600s. As you can see from the picture, it is a sealed glass cylinder containing fluids. In the cylinder, there are a few floating bubbles. These bubbles actually have metal tag attached to them which indicates the temperature. There are numbers and degree symbol that was engraved to the metal tag.

How do you read the temperature?

The metal tags in the cylinder actually have different weights. The bubbles were all hand-blown, so they are not with the same size and shape. But, to make sure that the thermometer works, each bubbles were inserted fluids so that they have the same density. The attached metal tags will make sure that the bubbles have slightly different density according to the weather surrounding the cylinder.

The main idea of the thermometer is that when the temperature outside the thermometer changes, so does the the temperature surrounding the bubbles.

Even though this thermometer isn't a device that is advanced in technology, it is fun to learn something old-fashioned and fascinating like this. So, do try and look at this.

Have fun learning. ^.^

That is all from me.
Until next time.
Assalamualaikum.

How cameras has changed over time

Assalamualaikum Madam Rose and fellow classmates :)

Well, well, well. Today I want to share about the evolution of cameras.

Have you noticed that when we were young, we have exposed with film camera where we have to finish the film first before we can see the pictures or the products. It was such a devastating to wait isn't it? However, today the technology has changed and makes our life easier.

Camera nowadays give more advantages to the photographers as they can immediately see the products after taking the pictures. Not only that, users also can easily delete the pictures if they want to. To add it up, for film camera, we have to send the film to the photo shop. We have to wait for like three or four days until we can see the pictures. Whilst for the digital camera, the pictures will automatically saved in the memory card and then we can just transfer it through the laptop or PC to see it.

From my observation, recently digital camera has become a trend. People like to bring their own gadget everywhere they go. On top of that, taking pictures has turned out to be one of the famous hobby among teenagers and adults. They even make this hobby as their personal income.

Snap snap snap!
Every picture tells it's own memories ;)

Toodles.

snoozefest no more!

I'm on a roll! ^^

so since I've got this mojo to update, lets just give it a go in one shot. why not? hehe. I've found this app for all you sleepyheads.

The Mission Alarm Clock!

this app guarantees that you wake up and get out of bed on time. and the way they do it is by forcing you to complete a mission in order to turn off the annoying sound of the alarm clock.

when you set an alarm you also choose what task you'll need to complete, from the list of included missions. those range from shooting a target, to pulling a lever, to completing small puzzles... when it's time for the alarm to go off it starts ringing and keeps going until you complete the mission.

the app also includes a snooze function (for those of us who are in serious relationships with our beds) and fun background music while the alarm is going off.

the graphics and sounds of this app are really cute and it's now free during their launch so give it a try! wake up early to class tomorrow and claim our free breakfast! :D

Aerogel

Hi guys!

Do you realize that we used a lot of energy?

The need for energy conservation has never been greater and its cost continually on the rise. It is estimated that 40% of our energy is used controlling the temperature in buildings. But, still 30% of this energy escapes from the building through insulated walls metal or wood studs in a process termed Thermal Bridging.

So, NASA has developed latest insulation technology called Aerogel which is the highest insulating material in existence!

This means that the technology has the potential to revolutionize energy conservation.

NASA has been developing Aerogel insulation technology for several years, using it on the space shuttle, space suits, and for many other advanced insulation requirements, including the last Mars mission.

A flower is on a piece of Aerogel which is suspended over a Bumsen Burner

Review of Benefits:
  • Very significant saving in energy costs
  • 100% recyclable
  • Contains no ozone depleting substances
  • Uses >30% recycled content
  • Composite material consisting of over 95% air
  • Hydrophobic, unaffected by moisture, mold or water
  • Easily applied via stick-on-back
  • "Class A" fire rated
  • Economical
  • Virtually no weight means low cost (& low emissions) shipping
  • Adds acoustical isolation
  • Not affected by age as it does not react with moisture of the atmosphere
  • Made in USA

shake it!

Assalamu'alaikum pretty people!

so I know most of you like to laze around in front of the idiot box, or used to before the Internet came along. but this device might just get you to be a couch potato once again.

behold, the eco-friendly remote control!

this invention came around when Sony challenged Industrial Design students from China to design eco-friendly devices. one of the participants from Dong Hwa University came up with this unique creation called the Sony Conductor TV Remote. it's a wand-shaped kind of remote that needed to be swayed side to side to power it on and the green LED light fire up to indicate its power level. to start navigating, one can wave the conductor left and right to change your TV set's volume, up and down to change channels and in a circular motion to switch your TV set on or off.

pretty neat, huh? :D

Identify the unidentified

Assalamualaikum :)

While browsing through Telegraph, there was this one article that attracted me. It's about the publishing of images of the body parts of unidentified or unclaimed deceased online. Those images will be uploaded on a new UK government's website that will be launched soon.

The purpose of doing this is to help people to recognise or identify missing family members, relatives, or friends. By looking up to the images online, they may identify some of the body features that might belong to their loved ones. This will help in solving the mystery of missing persons and clearing the unclaimed dead bodies record hold by the The Missing Persons Bureau UK. Public can deliver any information they have online.

Below is the example of images that will posted on the website:

This, for me is a great approach from the this crime agency and will give a huge impact on forensic world.

This is what it looks like: http://www.pdfonline.com/pdf-to-word-converter/

Just upload your PDF's and convert.

That's all, I've got to say.

Hope ya'll find it usefull^^

Busy bulb

Technology simplifies life. Yes it does. However, it does make us lazier. Ah, hate to admit it, but is very true indeed.....

So one of the things I figured that make people lazy to get up is, when they need adjust the brightness of lights at home, or to turn them on or off. No worries ladies and gents, you don't need to get up from your glorious bed or gaming chair anymore, because here's a thing for ya, the Bluetooth Bulb

Here are the steps:

1)  Buy the Bluetooth bulb (of course) and screw in the bulb into the socket.

2)  Download the app to your devices. It uses bluetooth 4.0 and compatible with iPhone 4S, iPad 3, Samsung Galaxy S III, Droid RAZR, Mac Mini, or MacBook Air. One bulb can be controlled by multiple devices.

3)  Enjoy! What an easy life. Adjust the brightness according to your mood. And guess what, a special RGB bulb allows you to change the colour ambiance. Sweet.

You can watch the video below to find out more about this:

Spy Sunglassess

Salam dearies!
Do you like to record things that happen before your eyes conveniently? But yet people might get suspicious on you if you try to record everything and you'll be marked as stalker.

Thus,to make sure your “mission” to record a particular tryst from a table away without looking too suspicious, some manufacturers have thrown in a remote control into the mix – this means you can always place your sunglasses facing your subject, pretend to read a newspaper and use the remote to begin your recording process. It will be able to perform recordings in VGA quality (640 x 480), or if you want more detail at the expense of shorter clips, then you can always select the higher 1,280 x 960 resolution count.
It takes a single charge to deliver 1.5 hours’ worth of recording. When done, just transfer your video onto a PC via USB, and you’re good and ready to go out for the next round of spying. Good thing the design does not look dated at all, otherwise it would have been a hard sell. Well, if you want to participate in something more covert, it is going to take more than just a  regular digital camera or camcorder – you would need a disguised option, and I
would think  the 59.99$ fits the bill perfectly.

But here are some reminders, Use it for good, don't use it to accumulate  your sins,(eg; that don't harm others), utilize it for seeking knowledge(eg; record your lecturers'  lectures) and etc. Well, as a mature Muslim grown up, I believe you guys are capable to judge  what is good or bad in align with Islamic teaching.Enjoy  broadening your knowledge!
