Social Networking and young teenagers

The new era comes with the new technology that brings along the new generation into the new world of social communication technology. This is what had happened to the young teenagers in Malaysia from the secondary school and  some of the primary school students.

Since the Facebook was introduce the whole world were going crazy about it especially the young teenagers. Each and every of them would have at least one account. First, they are eager to learn about information and communication technology as part of their new interest but unexpectedly it turns out into the addiction. The young teenagers were addicted to the social networking especially the Facebook.

They do not have any problem to go on line anytime or anywhere with their smart phone like I phone,Blackberry,Android and so on. Most of them would create an account by using their own name or create another interesting fake name and put their best picture to look good in it. Apart from that, there are some of the young teenagers from the primary school lied about their age.

Then, the situations growing into more complicated situation. They are so eager to add as many friend as they can and they would confirm any friend request from the stranger, even though they do not know them at all.To become worse, they start to comment on every picture or status, update their status everyday, share the pictures and even their contact number with the stranger that they only know from the Facebook.

It is a serious problem because the young teenagers do not know what they are doing and they do not realize or understand any consequences or something that would happen to them in the mean time. The Facebook or any other social networking can be a useful tools for them as part of the learning process but it also may bring harm. As the future teachers, what should we do in order to save the students or avoid from the same problems that would happen to our own students?. Let us think about it.

  1. what you are saying are all true. However, facebook does not only bring harm for the users. for instance, last two semesters in our Instructional Design class with Madam Mahmudah, we used Facebook to connect to each other. She put the announcements on her wall and also she was open for questions from students. If we know how to manipulate things,we can make something good out of them. Other than that, we have a lot of groups on Facebook such as TESL groups. Counseling groups, photography groups and so on. We can can get a lot of benefits from these groups.

  3. We need to educate youngsters how to use social networks properly. It is true that social networks can bring harm to them but social networks can also give benefits if they are used in the right way.
