Mobile Phones at Schools!

Assalamaualaikum..

Well, the issue of allowing students to bring mobile phones to school is few months back matter. But, it comes out again when National Union of the Teaching Profession (NUTP) revealed the result of a survey indicating that 100% out of 20,000 teachers disagree with the government's discussion. This survey was done randomly on the members of the union.

The reasons given by teachers are, it gives more disadvantages than benefits. They are afraid that mobile phones will be misused by students in school. They also add that public phones are provided in schools if they want to call someone in case of emergency.

Those were their opinions. But for me, as a millenium and sophisticated teacher, I am pleased with the government's desicion.

Why?

Firstly, we are not living in the 80s when teachers were given full authority on students and having mobile phones was rare among our community.

In this century, most of the students own a mobile phone. They might even have more than one. Mobile phone is not a desire anymore. It is a need. It facilitate the communication among people. Why do we ahve to restrict the students?

Secondly,

We boast around, saying that we want to born students with creative and innovative ability. If we still restrict the students with so many conditions, how do we want to develop their creativity and innovation?

Last one,

If teachers are afraid of students misusing mobile phones, then teachers should be proactive in preventing them. In class, for example, attract students' attention so that they will not be drawn into their mobile phones. Make some agreements with them about the usage of mobile phones. Most importantly, create rapport with them so that they can respect us and listen to what we say.

That's all for this time being.

So, what say you?

  1. (in my opinion) As for me, I don't think that students bring mobile phones to school is a good way. If I were to be a teacher later on, I don't want my students messaging, facebooking and etc while I'm teaching! They wouldn't bother to learn because their mind were distracted with other things. So, I think it is not a good idea.

  2. Salam Jannah :)

From my personal opinion, bringing mobile phones or any other gadgets to school will bring more harm than good. Students will be carried away and spend most of their time tapping the phones. However, if a school were to allow the students to bring mobile phones to make it easier for them to call/communicate parents/family members in case of emergency or when school had ended, I think it is a good idea. But, teacher must hold the mobile phones during class hours, and could only be given to students during recess time and when the last class of the day is about to end.

  3. Salam everyone. I admit it's hard to ask students to not bring phones nowadays. However, look at the survey! There must be a solid reason why 100% out of 20,000 teachers disagree to this matter. There are more cons than pros here. About creating and creative and innovative students, i think we should look back what does phone related to it anyway? computer lab equipped with internet connection is not enough?
    Anyway,great post Jannah :)
