Drink Urine

First of all, i would like to salute to all astronauts who were successfully back to the earth from earth and condolences for those made it halfway to the space just like what happened to the Columbia shuttle. They were very strong in terms of mental and physical. They were not just anybody because they had to pass through many physical tests and psychology tests so that they could work under strong pressure in the space.

Here, I would like to share with all of you something that people rarely ask when astronauts were in space. When they drank water, where did the WATER come FROM?

Yes, it did come from the supply that they brought by shuttle, but what about spaces residents who had to live at International Space Station (ISS) for months??

The only way is they had to drink their own URINE and SWEAT.
But, surely they will not purely drink from their urine. NASA astronauts and engineers had struggled to create recycling system designed to convert astronaut urine and sweat into drinking water aboard ISS using forward osmosis technology.

Bob Bagdigian of Marshall Space Flight Center said that, "The filters are not much different from those used on Earth, which means they use charcoal-like materials to pull more unwanted elements from the water. Another process uses chemical compounds that bond with the remaining contaminants so filters can pick them out of the water, too."

There is a video where you can see how the process of converting happens. Click here

Currently the NASA reports that the space residents were celebrating Halloween aboard ISS. Let's pray the best for them and may they come back to Earth safely.

What say you? :)

  1. Oh my God! this is not so shocking but great info!how scientist really struggle to make something seem impossible become possible! i ahve heard of a story from Tsunami victim who was afloat for many days(or month i forgot) in the middle of ocean. he has to drink his own urine to keep him alive because it is too dangerous to drink sea water. just sharing..heheh.

  2. As peculiar as it may seem, it is kinda logical for these astronauts to not having choice on what to drink up there because of the cost..am i right or am i right, Ajirah? :p haha

And wow what a job Mr. Flynn has! My room's wifi is so bad that the video just loaded for the first few secs but I guess the whole recycling must be very well monitored in order to make things cost effective. Thanks for this informative post!
